Petzl Sm'D non-locking carabiner
Petzl Sm'D non-locking carabiner
Shibari Supply carries this version of the Petzl Sm'D for rope tops and riggers who prefer the functionality of a non-locking carabiner. Without a locking mechanism, it is possible to quickly clip uplines into the carabiner instead of pulling the entire rope through it. This carabiner allows for that along with the benefits of a key lock nose closure that won't snag or damage your rope, which is typical of wire gate carabiners commonly used for this purpose. Also, while this carabiner is technically D-shaped, it is actually similar to an HMS, lending itself well to the lock-offs and hitches commonly used in rope suspension.
While this version of the Petzl Sm'D is narrow enough to easily clip into most chain drops while providing the strength necessary with a 23kn rating, we recommend the locking version for that purpose to prevent the possibility of extra chain links contacting the gate of the carabiner.
*When using non-locking carabiners for shibari and rope suspension, it is imperative to remain cognizant of your gate status and rope routing to avoid accidents.
